RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
